Swindon Badgers Under 10's Tournament

Two Up, Two Down
11th July 2004

Forty five minutes down the M4 found us in the palatial surroundings of the Zurich Training Centre at Wanborough. This was our biggest tournament to date, with twenty teams having been attracted from as far away as London, Southampton and Wales. It was obviously a popular tournament for the girls, and also for the tiny Wiltshire flies which were attracted to anyone wearing yellow. (It wasn’t just us, other teams had the same problem, honest!!)

We started brightly against the Badgers B team, but in a very even game we went down 1-0. There was no repeat in our next match though, as two goals from Georgia and another from a very determined Jaye saw us run out comfortable winners against Highworth. Sound defensive play from Ashleigh, Emma and Jade meant that stand-in keeper Felisha had nothing to do throughout the whole game.

With confidence rising another strong performance saw Georgia put us into the lead against Swindon Town B. A great header from Jessica was then just scrambled off the line by the keeper, before our opponents levelled it from the penalty spot. With just seconds remaining the local team were being urged on by their large following, but it was Georgia who took control and calmly slotted the ball into the net with almost the last kick of the game.

With just two teams progressing from the group, everything hung on our last match against local rivals Barton Rovers. Sadly their much bigger girls once again proved to be physically too strong for us and a 2-0 defeat meant we just missed out on second place by one point.

So it was off home a little earlier than we wanted, but the disappointment was eased a little as the hosts presented trophies to all the girls.

Squad: Georgia, Jessica, Jaye, Ashleigh, Emma, Jade, Felisha

The Vixens player of the tournament was Georgia, who left an impression on every team we played.
