First Goals, First WinWinnersh Rangers 0 - 2 Cubs14th March 2004
A downpour overnight had us worried that our first away game would fall victim to the weather. Thankfully Winnersh had arranged a pitch which was in remarkably good condition. After a good warm-up the Cubs were raring to go for their first all-girls match - also the first ever match for the Winnersh Under 8's team. It was end-to-end stuff with both teams mounting attacks but neither able to make the breakthrough in the first half. The girls kept their shape much better than in their previous game against the boys, and it nearly paid off when Maya made a great run but unfortunately her shot went narrowly wide. Georgia was doing some great work in midfield with some lovely passes, and Laura W worked tirelessly to support her. Emma and Jade defended superbly, and when Winnersh were able to threaten the Cubs goal they found keeper Laura in top form. In the second half the team was reshuffled to give some players a chance to try different positions. New signing Chelsea came into central midfield, ably supported by Jordina and Keana who also ran their socks off. Lauren took over from twin sister Laura in goal, and performed just as competently. The Cubs finally opened their account a few minutes into the second half. Chelsea broke clear of the Winnersh defence and gave the keeper no chance with a well - struck shot. Our first ever goal, and the large band of travelling supporters were ecstatic. Winnersh were also mounting attacks, but were unable to find the final touch. Midway through the half Georgia and Emma returned to the game in more attacking roles and their fresh legs started to create opportunities. It finally paid off when a great shot from Emma struck the foot of the post, and she was first to react to score from the rebound to secure the Cubs first victory. Both teams played the game in the best spirit and all the parents can be proud of the effort the girls put in. We would like to thank Winnersh Rangers for their hospitality and hope to entertain them in South Reading in the future. The Cubs player of the match was Laura W for her hard work and sound defending.
