Whiteknights Under 10's Girls TournamentOut in the Sun16th May 2004 After the battling performances in the rain two weeks ago, we were hoping for further improvement in the hot sunshine at Bulmershe. With four ten minute games in the space of one hour it was going to be tough for all the teams. Back to back fixtures meant a lot of football and not much time for ice cream, and little chance to go over the previous match before it was time for the next one. Our first game was against Whiteknights Gems. Just like last time we started slowly and gifted our opponents the lead when an opposing striker broke clear from her marker. This gave the girls an uphill struggle for the rest of the match until with seconds remaining the Whiteknights keeper strayed out of her area with the ball in her hands. Jaye took the resulting free kick and smashed the ball past the defensive wall into the roof of the net for her first ever goal. Sadly this was to prove the high point of the day. Next up were Reading Girls, a team with some talented individuals which has been together for a long time. We defended bravely for much of the game with the occasional attack, but Reading were worthy winners and we were not the only team to lose to them by four goals. As it turned out, one point from the remaining two games would have seen us qualify for the knockout. In both games we matched the opponents for much of the time, but our failure to clear the ball at the crucial moment saw us slip to defeat on both occasions. Unfortunately this left us bottom of the table on goal difference and out of the tournament. So, plenty to work on at training, but with a month until our next tournament we will pick ourselves up and look to do better next time. Player of the tournament was Jaye, for her full commitment and excellent goal. Squad: Laura, Lauren, Jade, Ashleigh, Jaye, Emma, Felisha, Jessica
