Girls Football in South Reading

First Match for the Cubs

Cubs 0 - 7 South Reading C
22nd February 2004

Georgia - midfield dynamo

The Cubs first match finally arrived on a bitterly cold February morning. The girls all turned up early, full of enthusiasm and looking extremely smart in their team kit. We had a full squad of ten players, so it was important that everyone kept as warm as they could whilst they were waiting for their turn to play.

The girls were still settling in when the boys broke through to score their first goal, following a good passing move. The Cubs responded by stepping up their game, with Jordina, Maya and Jaye running tirelessly in midfield to counter the ever-dangerous boys. Lauren battled bravely up front, but was unable to find a way through. At the back, goalkeeper Laura and captain Emma managed to restrict the boys to just one further goal before half time, despite being under a lot of pressure.

After the break a nervous Laura W made her first appearance in the game. Despite insisting that she only wanted to play for five minutes, she soon got stuck in and thoroughly enjoyed battling with the rest of the team for the whole half. Keana took over in goal to relieve the frozen Laura, and performed bravely in the face of constant pressure. Jade grew in confidence in defence, and made some crucial tackles. Georgia was a revelation when she switched to central midfield and was unlucky not to score when an excellent shot whistled just past the wrong side of the post.

There was no denying the boys, and they eventually ran out winners 7-0. Nevertheless, the girls all enjoyed the experience, and the coach will be focusing on those areas where they will particularly benefit from extra practice and guidance. The team can take heart from the fact that this season's all conquering Vixens lost their first match 14-0 just two and a half years ago.

The Cubs would like to thank the boys for being such good sports, and referees Tina (first half) and Joss (second half) who were also making their debuts in this role.

The Cubs player of the match was Emma, for her outstanding work in defence.
