Gems Smash and GrabSouth Reading Vixens 0 - 1 Whiteknights Gems23rd April 2005
The Vixens kicked off with the energetic Azara up front. Nicole took her now customary role in central midfield, a position she has claimed through her hard work and tough tackling over the last few weeks. She was ably assisted by Stacey on the left and debut girl Sophie on the right. Regular defender and captain Emily was partnered by the fast improving Zoe, whilst Deanna started in goal. It wasn’t long before Deanna was called upon to demonstrate her potential between the sticks, with some confident handling and kicking. But with Emily's experience and the rest of the team learning fast, it wasn't all one way traffic and Azara had opportunities to run at goal. Midway through the half Stacey took a knock, giving the opportunity for Shannon to demonstrate her improving skills. The Vixens continued to deny the more experienced girls, and the first period finished goalless. After the break Azara donned the gloves to allow Deanna to take her place up front. The fit again Stacey returned to the fray and the new Vixens continued to impress. The only goal of the game came five minutes from the end. Some committed but over enthusiastic tackling from the Vixens defence left the referee with no choice but to award a penalty to the visitors. A well placed kick gave Azara no chance, and secured victory for the Gems. Nevertheless it was a good learning experience for the new Vixens. They now know the standard they must reach to compete in the league next season. But with four months to prepare and plenty of tournaments scheduled, the girls will be ready for action when the time comes. Squad: Deanna, Emily, Zoe, Nicole, Stacey, Sophie, Shannon, Azara The Vixens player of the match was Azara, who had a lively first half and also looked confident in goal.
