Vixens Tip-Toe Past Tigers

South Reading Vixens 6 - 0 Theale Tigers Girls
16th October 2004

Alice - hat trick Being somewhat understrength this week, the Vixens were able to give SCML debuts to their new goalkeeper Sophie Sawyer, winger Alice Martineau and central midfielder Jade Beaumont. The new-look girls set to work straight away with good possession play, using the full width of the pitch. With Amber Wilson, Siobhan Hayes, Star and Alice taking it in turns to control the wings, captain Serena Cox was provided with plenty of ammunition up front. But despite dominating the entire match, the goals seemed few and far between as the visitors put everyone behind the ball to deny the Vixen frontline time and time again.

With the Vixen backline virtually redundant, both Deanna Peters and Charlotte Bowcock were able to lend support up front to add to the visitors workload. Charlotte struck a great volley direct from a well-taken corner kick which would have been the goal of the season had it not been narrowly turned away by the tenacious Tigers keeper.

It is very difficult when a team comes just to defend and disappointing for the spectators but the Vixens plugged away to score three in each half as they proceeded to go through the motions in a professional manner. Hopefully the somewhat flattering scoreline for the Tigers will provide enough encouragement for them to 'have a go' in our next encounter and make a real match of it. According to the Theale website they are preparing to 'whoop' us next time - but surely to win you need to score, and to score you need to get a shot on target, and that usually means getting out of your own half? But as the saying goes, every dog has it's day - so why not Tiger? On a serious note though, the Tigers have come a long way in a short period of time and are quite capable of causing an upset or two in this league - with the continued backing of a great set of supporters they should be aiming for a top three finish this year.

It should prove to be an interesting encounter in our next match, hopefully with the full squad available.

Goals from Jade, Siobhan, Serena and a hat trick from Alice were more than enough to take all three points in this less than thrilling performance.

Player of the match went to Sophie who kept a clean sheet on her debut and never looked troubled between the sticks.
