Girls Football in South Reading

Late Strike Sinks Vixens

Winnersh Rangers 1 - 0 South Reading Vixens
15th October 2005

Maya - great defending With a couple of girls unavailable this week the manager had to shuffle the pack a bit, and the team took to the field in an unfamiliar 3-3 formation. Keana took her normal position in goal whilst Maya, Jordina and Jemma started at the back with Laura, Sydney, Georgia and Karla rotating for the three forward positions.

The girls started off brightly, showing a welcome improvement on the last couple of weeks as they returned to form. The match turned out to be a battle of the fittest, with both teams matched for ability. Most of the game was fought out between the midfield and defenders, with chances few and far between. With both goalkeepers redundant for much of the time, it was no surprise when the first half finished goalless.

The second period was much the same with the odd ball breaking free, but whenever the Vixens pressed forward the Winnersh keeper collected the ball confidently. As the game drew to a close the Vixens won a corner. Karla played a fine ball into the danger area, Laura latched on to it but saw her shot hit the post. Then with just 3 minutes to go, the Vixens defenders were beaten for pace. Keana seemed to have the shot covered but it took a deflection and spun into the net for the only goal of the game.

The girls didn't deserve to lose, they can hold their heads high as they all played brilliantly, certainly their best performance of the last few weeks. Well done girls, we can still pull it back!

Player of the match went to Maya for making a number of crucial tackles in defence.
