South Reading Vixens

Girls Football in South Reading

South Reading Vixens 4 - 1 Winnersh Rangers Falcons
4th December 2005

Malicia - everywhere The Vixens got off to a flying start, with Kelsey hitting the post in the first minute from Karis’s well struck corner. Jaye then had a good shot a minute later, and was unfortunate to see the ball fly just the wrong side of the post. But Winnersh fought back, and Karis had to make a goal line clearance to keep the score level. The end-to-end football continued as Kelsey forced a good save, the Falcons hit the Vixens post, then Jaye’s free kick rebounded from the Winnersh crossbar. Midway through the half the Vixens made a couple of changes, and within a minute the super-subs combined to score the opening goal as Charmaine’s strike hit the post, leaving Malicia to tap in from close range. Sixty seconds later Charmaine doubled the lead, again from close range, and the Vixens should have been firmly in the driving seat. But with the girls easing off, suddenly it was Winnersh who started to break forward, creating a number of good chances. Ashleigh and Karis fought a brave rearguard action and Ellie made an excellent save, but the Falcons eventually scored a deserved goal with the Vixens defence stretched once too often.

Half time came as a relief, giving the Vixens a chance to regroup and reorganise. Jessica dropped back to contain the dangerous Falcons attack, and Malicia added her strength and pace to the defence. Stability returned, and Jaye and Charmaine both brought good saves from the excellent Falcons keeper. Midway through the half Jaye finally settled any remaining nerves as she fired the ball into the left hand corner of the Winnersh net. With the clock running down Kelsey then made sure of the points when her shot spun off the keeper and into the goal. But with Winnersh battling to the end, it took a great block from Malicia to keep the final score at 4-1.

Winnersh will have been disappointed at the margin of defeat, as they created several opportunities from some excellent fast-paced attacks. But with the Vixens playing some great football of their own, and keeper Ellie and defenders Ashleigh, Karis and Malicia in outstanding form, it was a good day for the hosts.
