6th May 2006
The girls kicked off their first game against Westwood Diamonds, and what a start! Yasmin set out her stall for the day with a long range shot in the opening minute to put the girls in front. However, Westwood levelled it a few minutes later with a shot from the right. Keeper Mikala managed to get a touch to the ball, only to see it creep into the net off the far post. The Diamonds then took the lead with a good move early in the second half, before the Vixens were awarded a penalty after Jaye was brought down in the box. She stepped up to the spot, but her well struck shot hit the post and rebounded to safety. This seemed to give the Diamonds a lift, and just a minute later they extended their lead with a good long shot as the Vixens defence allowed them too much time and space. Next opponents Whiteknights made a strong start, taking an early lead with a thunderbolt from the right which gave Mikala no chance. The Vixens generosity continued a few minutes later, as again the opposition was allowed space in front of goal and took full advantage to go 2-0 up. Half time then saw both teams make changes, as the rain decided to join the party. This seemed to wake the Vixens up, and they pressed forward against a much reshuffled opposition. The girls finally pulled one back when Jaye’s shot rebounded off the post and Jessica was on hand to supply the finish. They then went looking for the equaliser, which finally arrived in the last seconds of the match. Yasmin’s long range shot was goal bound, and Charmaine got the faintest of touches to ensure it crossed the line. Then it was time for a burger break for the girls, as the parents retreated under cover. A rearrangement to the playing schedule allowed extra time for the players to top up on sweets, and finally it was time to head back to the pitch as the rain eased off. Initially it seemed that the girls had over-indulged on the calories, and next opponents Westwood Emeralds had the better of the first half. They fired a warning shot with a good cross across the Vixens goalmouth, and a couple of minutes later hit the bar. The Emeralds were first to the rebound, and blasted the ball past Malicia to give themselves the lead at the break. But the Vixens weren’t done yet, and for the first few minutes of the second period it was the Yasmin show. A strong shot almost squeezed it’s way past the keeper who somehow managed to sit on the ball before recovering, then Yas got the ball in the net only to have been caught offside, before going close again with another good effort. Finally Kelsey took charge, won the ball on the left and slipped it past the keeper to level the score. With the clock running down the Vixens pushed forward, the Emeralds keeper made an excellent save, but Charmaine was there to poke home the rebound and secure a late win. The final game was against a Thatcham team that had been in the wars and was weakened by injuries. Charmaine showed no sympathy though, as she ran through to slot the ball past the keeper. The girls stepped up a gear in the second half and doubled the lead when Charmaine charged down a goal kick and set up Kelsey to score from close range. Charmaine then rounded off the scoring when she got on the end of Karis’s excellent free kick to the far post, and the Vixens finished off the day with a win. Thanks go to David and Andy at Westwood for organising the event, Whiteknights for supplying the barbecue and also the mums who did a magnificent job providing the food throughout the day. A special mention also goes to those Vixens mums and dads who ran the line, all of whom were doing it for the first time. Squad: Mikala, Karis, Malicia, Ashleigh, Perri, Jade, Felisha, Charmaine, Nicole, Jessica, Kelsey, Azara, Jaye, Yasmin The Vixens Player of the Day was Yasmin, who was lively up front throughout
