South Reading Vixens

Girls Football in South Reading

South Reading Vixens 0 - 9 Reading Girls
29th January 2006

Jaye - committed Sleepovers and other activities left the Vixens with just seven players available for their cup semi final against the all-conquering Reading Girls. With one late arrival it even looked as though the Vixens would have to start with six, and Reading sportingly offered to play with six as well. The gesture was much appreciated, but thankfully wasn't necessary as the full side were ready to play by kick off time.

Even so, considerable reshuffling of the side was required with some of the girls having to play out of position. Ashleigh stood in as keeper, and pulled off a number of brave saves. Mikala dropped back into defence to partner Karis, and both girls battled for everything throughout the game. Charmaine covered central midfield and never stopped running, with Kelsey competing strongly on the left and Chloe looking for a way through on the right. Jaye completed the side, as she put in her normal energetic performance up front.

The first 20 minutes saw the girls on the back foot, but only conceding two goals - the first taking a deflection in front of goal to give Ashleigh no chance, and the second after Mikala was caught out of position as she assisted an injured Reading Girls player. Jaye and Chloe swapped positions and confidence improved as the Vixens began to push forward more, with the best chance falling to Kelsey who was unlucky to see her long range thunderbolt fly inches over the bar.

The hosts had a tougher task in the second half as they kicked off into the wind. Two goals were conceded in the first 10 minutes, but the Vixens were still up for the fight until weary legs allowed the Girls to hit another five in the last 12 minutes. Charmaine, Kelsey, Jaye and Chloe all had opportunities at the other end, but it wasn't going to happen for the Vixens today. Nevertheless this was a great performance from the whole team, a huge improvement on last week, and if they can continue to play at this level they will finish their league season strongly.

Squad: Ashleigh, Karis, Mikala, Chloe, Charmaine, Kelsey, Jaye

The Vixens player of the match could have gone to anyone, but in the end Jaye edged it for her hard work and commitment.
