South Reading Vixens

Girls Football in South Reading

Wey Valley 4 - 5 South Reading Vixens
5th March 2006

Alice - outstanding The Vixens staged an amazing comeback to take all three points in their first league game of the Ash Trophy. Playing away against the newly crowned league champions, the game was always going to be tough and this proved to be the case until the last eight minutes. Wey Valley took an early lead from the penalty spot with goalkeeper Alana brilliantly saving the first kick but unable to stop the follow up. Valley then increased their lead soon after with a close range effort to leave the girls with an uphill battle to climb. The Vixens then pulled themselves back into the game after some sustained pressure when Hannah netted from a corner with a clever flick making it 2-1 at half time

The Vixens started slowly after the break and were soon on the back foot again when a defensive error allowed the Valley to increase their lead to 3-1. This then sparked the Vixens into action and two goals in as many minutes, the first a 25 yard screamer from Deanna and the second a cross from Alice that fooled the keeper, put the girls back in the driving seat. At 3-3 the Vixens were looking the stronger side with Olivia, Hannah, Jade and Alice working tirelessly in midfield, and could have gone into the lead for the first time when a close range shot from striker Siobhan was well saved by the Wey keeper. However it was Valley that went back in front once again against the run of play with a well taken goal, and, with only eight minutes left on the clock it looked as if the Vixens were going to suffer their first defeat since October.

But it was not to be and an inspired reorganisation which introduced goalkeeper Alana into midfield brought the Vixens back onto level terms, when her clever lob beat the keeper from 20 yards out to make it 4-4. With the Vixens now piling on the pressure and with only a minute left on the clock, Jade picked up the ball on the right from an Amber pass, beat the defender and struck a low shot into the bottom left hand corner to send the travelling supporters into raptures. All credit goes to all the players for a battling performance, but in particular Charlotte who played on despite receiving an injury in the first 10 minutes.

The Vixens player of the match was Alice, who created a number of goal-scoring opportunities, supported the defence, and scored a magnificent goal.
