Girls Football in South Reading

Single Strike Ends Unbeaten Run

Reading Girls 1 - 0 South Reading Vixens
25th September 2005

Deanna – outstanding in defence The Reading girls were clearly up for this one, with a well organised and disciplined warm up in progress as the Vixens arrived. With the visitors having no strikers available, it was clear that a tough challenge lay ahead. Midfielder Jade and recent signing Femi were charged with filling the vacant positions up front as the girls took to the field.

The first half lived up to expectations with chances at either end, but the keepers on both sides dealt comfortably with everything that came at them to leave the game goalless at half time. The second period started in much the same fashion, with the hard working hosts closing down the Vixens at every opportunity and preventing the South Reading girls getting into their normal passing game. They also pressed forward on a number of occasions, and stand-in keeper Charlotte had to be at her best to claim a looping shot which was heading just under the crossbar.

As the half progressed the Reading girls seemed to tire whilst the Vixens could not find any inspiration, and a draw seemed in prospect. But with just five minutes to go the unthinkable happened. A long clearance out of the Reading defence soared over all the outfield players, bounced and caught the wind as the advancing Charlotte came out to collect it. She got her fingers to the ball, but could not make a clean catch and it sailed on into the net.

The Vixens pressed forward as the home crowd urged the ref to blow up. Deanna made a storming run from defence, Star put in crosses and Jade tried to battle her way through. But Reading sensed victory and held firm until the final whistle, which was the cue for great celebrations from team and supporters alike.

So congratulations to Reading on being the first team to beat the Vixens in over two years of all-girls league football. It was a hard fought contest, and a sign that this year’s North East Hants title will be a much closer affair. With Wey Valley waiting in the wings, it certainly promises to be an exciting season. One thing we can be sure of is that the Vixens will be fired up and ready to go for the return, and a thrilling game is in prospect when these two sides meet again.
