South Reading Vixens

Girls Football in South Reading

Brighton Tour

23rd / 24th August 2003

A bright and sunny morning saw the Vixens depart early from South Reading Leisure Centre for their first annual tour. We had allowed plenty of time to get to our match venue at Shoreham, but as it turned out the roads were empty and we were there in about 90 minutes. That left plenty of time for the adults to enjoy a much needed tea or coffee whilst the girls let off steam after the journey.

Our hosts ASC Strikers Boys arrived, and we went down to the Astroturf pitch which they had arranged for us to play on. After a good warm-up the girls (assisted by Joss, Stefan, Jamie and Jamah) quickly raced into a 3-1 half time lead. After the break the boys recovered to 3-3 before the Vixens hit the bar with only a few minutes remaining. This seemed to spur the boys on, and they scored two late goals to run out winners 5-3. The game was played in a great spirit throughout and was officiated by an excellent referee. 11-a-side football was a new experience for both teams, and they adapted superbly. We parted company, thanking them for their hospitality and wishing them good luck for the forthcoming season, and headed for the beach.

The weather was perfect, and whilst the adults sunned themselves the girls had a great afternoon in the sea. Eventually it was time to head for Truleigh Hill Youth Hostel, our accommodation for the night. We had the place to ourselves, which allowed the girls free rein to enjoy themselves. In the evening, it was off to the local carvery, with a McDonalds option for those that preferred it.

Next morning we enjoyed an excellent cooked breakfast before heading back to the beach. It wasn't so warm this time, and by lunchtime the lure of the pier and arcades became overwhelming. Eventually the spending money was all gone, and it was back to the seafront pool and fountain for a last ice cream and splashabout. The girls were up for more, but the parents were exhausted and ready to head for home.

Everyone had a great time and thanks are due to Jason for all his hard work in arranging everything. He is now preparing next year's bigger and even better tour to the unsuspecting South Wales resort of Tenby. Watch this space!
